OHS Risk Management and Risk Assessments

OHS & Workers Compensation is the process of recognising situations that have the potential to cause harm to people, property or the environment, and doing something to prevent a harmful situation occurring or a person being harmed. A risk assessment is a process of steps, when taken in sequence, that allow informed decisions to be made about how best to avoid or control the impact of risks in the workplace. The NSW OHS Regulation 2001 requires risk management processes to be implemented in all workplaces and employers must take reasonable care to indentify any foreseeable hazard that has the potential to harm the health and safety of workers or anyone else in the workplace. The steps in performing a risk assessment are:

  1. Identify the hazards in each step of the task or process
  2. Assess the risk with any existing controls in place (using the UNSW risk rating sysem)
  3. Evaluate the existing controls - are they adequate?
  4. If further controls are required to reduce the risk, reassess the risk with these additional controls in place.
  5. Review and evaluate the risk assessments regularly, especially if new information becomes available, new equipment is introduced or the task changes in any way.
